Finishing Ideas - Stand-Ups

Let’s face it, there are only so many pillows a couch can hold. So, why not try finishing your canvases as stand-ups. They get attention and allow you to display your pieces in new venues like on tabletops and fireplace mantles. The secret is using a foam core block as your base and upholstering it with your stunningly stitched canvas, some fabrics, and trims. Add some feet and you’ve got it!

KLJ 9 - September Autumn Leaves Santa

Poised atop handsome striped bun feet, these Santas of the Month are quite dapper fellows. Autumn and it’s pleasantries;bushels of crisp apples, bright pumpkins and acorns. But the fun doesn’t stop when you take your last stitch. The addition of generous ribbon toppers add a crowning glory to your stand-up while a few strands of glass beads pick up the color of your threads and attract the eye.

Black accents as well as notable embellishments add drama and elegance to these stand-ups. Mounds of ribbon, sugar plums and a few dangling lengths of beads create a notable Christmas display.

9.5”w x 12”h x 2” deep

This stand up has two bun feet which are made of big wooden beads purchased at my local craft store. Painted to match and trimmed with a ruffled ribbon, they are attached by running a nail up through the wooden bead and into the foam core block....now that’s fancy feet!

Stand-ups are all about the trimmings. Theses boxes are edged with a gathered, fluffy rayon, black “boa” that ghoulishly screams Halloween. The bow at the top of your piece is also an important element. The key is ribbon selection. Mix your patterns and widths. Mix moire and organdy. The more mixing the merrier. Halloween never looked so good.

KCN 1113-Swedish Santa

The stand-up box can be made to the exact size of your canvas or framed with fabric. I tend to use a small scale check for framing. This allows the beautifully stitched canvas to take center stage; you don’t want a strong patterned fabric to steal your stitching thunder. Also notice the Swedish Santa box and how the top bow was embellished with some silk flowers. Oh the possibilities!!

KCN 93-Double Ball Topiary

This stand-up rests on four feet. A French petite ball gimp adds a playful flair. It is so much fun to choose a variety of trims to finish your piece - gimps and twists and cords, oh my! So many choices.
For this stand-up I did a bow using seven different ribbon types and then added a tassel for even more delicious drama.
